Centaurea nigra sups. rivularis
Family: Asteraceae
This rhizomatous perennial herb can be seen on the edges of humid pastures and paths in Vale do Lourêdo. This species can reach a height of between 40 and 100 centimeters and has a simple, green stem which branches out at the top. Its leaves are green and alternating, being different at the base and at the stem. The basal leaves are toothed and slightly lobed and lanceolate, while the stem leaves are simple and lanceolate, with hairs on the surface. The flowers of this herbaceous plant are very characteristic, pink-purple and grouped in chapters (inflorescence whose axis is flat or very short and is surrounded by bracts at the base). Flowering occurs from June to October.
This herbaceous species is endemic to the Iberian Peninsula (a native species that occurs exclusively in this region), and in Portugal it occurs mainly in the north. Their preferred habitats are bogs, pastures or meadows with moist soils and banks of watercourses, preferably in deciduous forests.
